After studying this chapter, you should be able to understand:

  • Introduction to Scaling & Its Meaning
  • Scaling in Fractions (Equivalent Fractions)
  • Scaling Up and Scaling Down
  • Types of Fractions (Proper, Improper, Mixed, Like, Unlike, Unit)
  • Converting Between Improper Fractions and Mixed Fractions
  • Real-Life Applications of Scaling

Comparison of Fractions

Comparing fractions with same denominators-

Suppose a chocolate has 8 parts. Peter has 5 parts of the chocolate whereas Aaron has remaining 3 parts. Who has more chocolate?

It is obvious that Peter has more chocolate than Aaron since he has 5 parts.

When we express this in fraction form, we can write,

Chocolate Peter has = 58

Chocolate Aaron has = 38

Here Peter has more parts than Aaron.

So, 58>38

Thus, Peter has more chocolate.

So, we can say, if two fractions have the same denominator i.e. they are like fractions, then the fraction with greater numerator is greater.

Examples-

  1. 36<56

  1. 915>715

Comparing fractions with same numerators-

If two fractions have same numerators, then the fraction with greater denominator is smaller.

Dividing a whole in more number of parts makes each part smaller.

Therefore, greater the denominator, smaller would be the number.

  1. 512<59

  1. 715>719

Comparing Mixed Fractions

If there are two mixed fractions-

  • First, we compare the whole part. The fraction with greater whole part is greater.

  • If the whole part is same, then we compare the fractional part as we have learnt above. The fraction with greater fractional part is greater in such case.

  • We can also compare two mixed fractions by converting them into improper fractions and then comparing them like other fractions.

Examples-

Compare:

  1. 235<  515

  1. 879>  529

    Source: Kapdec.com

  1. 239>  229

    Source: Kapdec.com

  1. 131722>  131222

    Source: Kapdec.com

In each one of the above examples, first, we compare the whole number part of the mixed fraction and arrive at conclusion.

If we find whole numbers are equal, then we compare the fractional component of the mixed number.

Introduction: Place Value System, India and International According to our number system, the value of a digit depends upon the place it holds in the number. The TRUE and ACTUAL value of a number depends on two factors: (1)                Face value of a digit in a number is the digit itself (2)                Place value of a digit in a number depends […]

Fractions John had a chocolate which had 12 pieces. He ate 1 piece. How much of the chocolate is left with John? We can see, the chocolate is divided into 12 parts of which 1 part was eaten by John. So, 11 out of 12 parts is left with him. We can denote this as  which […]

Prime Factorization   When we express a composite number as a product of prime numbers, it is called prime factorization. The set of prime numbers are called the prime factors of the given number.   Example-Let us take a number 24. Factors of 24 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24.   Out of these factors, […]
