{"id":727,"date":"2025-10-15T10:39:32","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T10:39:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/?post_type=docs&#038;p=727"},"modified":"2026-04-10T10:56:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T10:56:07","slug":"what-is-the-indian-place-value-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/what-is-the-indian-place-value-system\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Indian Place Value System?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>The Indian Place Value System<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Using the same concepts as we\u00a0had\u00a0learned in the introduction,\u00a0the Indian Place Value System is also a\u00a0Base -10 number system, with following key rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We start grouping the number from\u00a0the\u00a0right,\u00a0first\u00a0in\u00a0group of 3 and then further\u00a0in\u00a0groups of 2.<\/li>\n<li>Starting from the right, the first period is ones, consisting of three place values i.e. ones, tens and hundreds.<\/li>\n<li>The next period is thousands, consisting of two places i.e. thousands and ten-thousands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The third period is lakhs consisting of two places i.e. lakhs and ten-lakhs and then crores and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-728\" src=\"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/venture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/i1-300x46.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"46\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Reading and writing a number<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While reading a number\u00a0per the Indian number system, all of the digits in the same period are read together and the name of the period (except the ones) is read along with them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>While writing a number\u00a0per\u00a0the Indian system, we put a comma after every period to separate the period to make it easier to read.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Example 1:<\/b>\u00a0Write the following in words:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>67,248\u00a0(b) 34,79,831\u00a0(c) 5,81,45,063<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution:<\/b>\u00a0Let us arrange the digits in Indian place value chart as follows and then simply write them using the grouping of periods and the respective location of each digit in a group.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-729\" src=\"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/venture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/i2-300x47.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"47\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>67, 248 = Sixty-seven thousand two hundred forty-eight<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>34,79,831 = Thirty-four lakh seventy-nine thousand eight hundred thirty one<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>5,81,45,063 = Five crores eighty-one lakh forty five thousand sixty three<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Example 2:\u00a0<\/b>Write the following in figures:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Seventy crores thirty-eight lakh twenty seven thousand four hundred fifty six<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Nineteen thousand fifty<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>Four lakh thirty eight thousand nine hundred twenty five<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution:<\/b>\u00a0Let us make the Indian place value chart and write the digits in the respective places from the number name.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-730\" src=\"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/venture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/i3-300x47.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"47\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The required number is-<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>70,38,27,456<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>19,050<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>4,38,925<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Place Value as per Indian Place Value System<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Let us see the place value of all digits in the number 6,14,92,487 as per Indian Place Value System<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-732\" src=\"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/venture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/i4-300x70.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"70\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The above figure shows the place value of the number as per Indian Place Value System. The only difference in International Place Value system would be how the number and its place value is read. But the actual numerical value remains the same.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Comparison between Indian &amp; International Place Value System<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The major difference between two systems of breaking up numbers is the position of placing commas for grouping numbers into periods.<\/p>\n<p>Key Difference 1:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In\u00a0<b>Indian number system<\/b>:\u00a0 we start grouping the number from right first in group of 3 and further in groups of 2<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>BUT in\u00a0<b>International system<\/b>, we start grouping the number from right in group of 3 called period.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Key Difference 2:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In\u00a0<b>Indian number system<\/b>: We use terms like ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, lakhs and crores<\/li>\n<li>BUT in\u00a0<b>International system<\/b>, we use terms like ones, hundreds, thousands, millions and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let us look at the table below to compare the two systems:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-733\" src=\"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/venture\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/i5-300x53.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"53\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We can observe from the table that:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>10 lakhs = 1 million<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>1 crore = 10 millions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol>\n<li>10 Crores = 100 millions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Did you know??<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Zero was invented by Aryabhata.
