{"id":689,"date":"2025-10-15T10:13:35","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T10:13:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/?post_type=docs&#038;p=689"},"modified":"2026-04-13T06:32:16","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T06:32:16","slug":"what-are-the-place-value-systems-for-india-and-the-international-number-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kapdec.com\/help\/what-are-the-place-value-systems-for-india-and-the-international-number-system\/","title":{"rendered":"What are the Place Value Systems for India and the International Number System?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Introduction: Place Value System, India and International<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to our number system, the value of a digit depends upon the place it holds in the number.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>TRUE and ACTUAL value<\/strong>\u00a0of a number depends on two factors:<\/p>\n<p><strong>(1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Face value<\/strong>\u00a0of a digit in a number is the digit itself<\/p>\n<p><strong>(2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Place value<\/strong>\u00a0of a digit in a number depends upon the place it occupies in the place value chart (you can also call it as the \u201cposition\u201d of digit in a number)<\/p>\n<p>In the Base-10 number system, starting from \u201cright hand side\u201d AND moving towards left, each place has a value of 10 times the place to its right.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The value of the first place beginning at the \u201cextreme\u201d right is \u201c<strong>one<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The value of the next place left to it is \u201c<strong>ten<\/strong>\u201d i.e. 10 times of 1,<\/li>\n<li>The value of place left to tens place is \u201c<strong>hundred<\/strong>\u201d i.e. 10 times 10, the next is \u201cthousand\u201d and so on.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>(a) The face value of 9 in 19,650 is 9.<\/p>\n<p>(b) The face value of 1 in 2,515 is 1.<\/p>\n<p>So, the\u00a0<strong>VALUE of a digit in any number<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>=\u00a0<strong>Face Value<\/strong>\u00a0of the Digit \u00d7\u00a0<strong>Place Value of the place<\/strong>\u00a0it occupies in the place value chart<\/p>\n<p>Let us understand the concept of place value through a place value chart-<\/p>\n<p>In the above table,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The place value of &#8216;1&#8217; at\u00a0<strong>ones place\u00a0<\/strong>is one or &#8216;1&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0<strong>tens place<\/strong>the place value of 1 is 1 \u00d7 10 i.e. &#8217;10&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0<strong>hundreds place<\/strong>the place value of 1 is 10 \u00d7 10 i.e. &#8216;100&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0<strong>thousands place<\/strong>the place value of 1 is 100 \u00d7 10 i.e. &#8216;1,000&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0<strong>ten-thousands place<\/strong>the place value of 1 is 1,000 \u00d7 10 i.e. &#8216;10,000&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0<strong>hundred-thousand place<\/strong>the place value of 1 is 10,000 \u00d7 10 i.e. &#8216;100,000&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>At\u00a0<strong>one-million place<\/strong>the place value of 1 is 100,000 \u00d7 10 i.e. &#8216;1,000,000&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What is the place value and face value of &#8220;8&#8221; in<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a)875<\/li>\n<li>b)80,376<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let us have a look at the place value chart to understand better<\/p>\n<p>Now, the face value of 8 in both the cases is &#8216;8&#8217; itself.<\/p>\n<p>However, the place value of a digit changes with its position in any number.<\/p>\n<p>As we can see from the above table,<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>a)Since 8 occupies the hundreds place in 875, so, its place value is 8 \u00d7 100 = 8-hundreds or 800<\/li>\n<li>b)Since 8 occupies the ten-thousands place in 80,376, so, its place value is 8 \u00d7 10,000 = 80-thousands or 80,000<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do Remember<\/strong><\/p>\n<p># The ACTUAL value of 0 is always zero irrespective of the place it occupies.<\/p>\n<p>To make it easier to read, a number is separated into groups of digits using commas. Each of these groups is called a\u00a0<strong>period<\/strong>. When a number is expressed in this form, it is called the \u201c<strong>standard form<\/strong>\u201d of the number. There are two number systems that are used worldwide.
