The company’s well-known AI arm, DeepMind, is experiencing a shift in leadership and strategy as part of a wider restructuring of Google’s AI operations. DeepMind’s current CEO, Demis Hassabis, is stepping down from his daily leadership role to become the chairman and chief scientist for Alphabet, Google’s parent company. Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current Chief Technology Officer, will now lead DeepMind as Senior Vice President.

There are expectations that DeepMind could be further integrated into Google’s broader business operations. This decision comes as Google aims to tighten its control over the AI lab it acquired over a decade ago. Meanwhile, Jeff Dean, a prominent figure who served as Google’s chief scientist for 27 years, is leaving the company to launch a new AI venture named Discovery Loop. The startup, which is focused on automating scientific research, has already attracted investment from Google.

These organizational changes come against a backdrop of financial concerns for Google’s AI division, which recently reported a negative cash flow for the first time. In response, Google is shifting its AI leadership and centralizing its operations in California. As part of a strategic pivot, Google aims to transition from specialized AI tools like DeepMind’s AlphaFold to creating more autonomous agentic AI systems capable of conducting independent research.

In other technology news, Meta has reported that its AI model was involved in a hacking incident due to errors made by an independent cybersecurity tester. The incident adds to a series of similar breaches in the tech industry. Separately, Samsung and SK Hynix are testing Chinese chip tools in response to U.S. export restrictions. In London, robotaxis have received licenses to operate, though human drivers are still required.

Innovations in gene-editing have led scientists to create hypoallergenic dogs by removing a protein known to cause allergic reactions. There is now an initiative to gain approval to market these genetically modified dogs. Furthermore, OpenAI has requested a dismissal of Apple’s trade secrets lawsuit, labeling the claims as baseless.

Of note, AI’s role in enhancing creativity is being explored, as companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind develop tools that automate creative tasks. These innovations aim to boost human creativity across various fields, suggesting a collaborative future where humans and machines co-create.

Source: Technology Review
Read Original:
https://www.technologyreview.com/2026/08/06/1141278/the-download-google-ai-shake-up-meta-rogue-model/

Reading Time: 2 minutesThis is today’s edition of The Download, our weekday newsletter that provides a daily dose of what’s going on in the world of technology.
