Spearheaded by founder Bob Bolduc, the program partnered with Storyshares and HILL for Literacy. Since its introduction, students who completed the program have shown significant improvements, doubling their MAP score growth compared to peers.

The program connects with families by hosting open houses and online meet-and-greets, emphasizing its academic support and safe environment, and providing free enrollment. Catering to a diverse community, staff members who speak Spanish help overcome language barriers.

The literacy initiative operates with small class sizes and high-intensity tutoring. Each classroom has around 15 students and is guided by two to three trained adults, maintaining a targeted 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio. This is achieved by combining licensed educators and interns interested in youth literacy education. The program employs the Literacy Intervention for Teens (LIFT) curriculum, which incorporates a method called “perky pace.” This approach involves brief direct instruction followed by practice and choice, helping to build students’ confidence.

Students, ranging from grades 4 to 8, have access to age-appropriate materials, with a library of ebooks and printed books featuring relatable stories. To accommodate preferences, printed workbooks are also used, allowing students to track progress and stay organized.

Strategic assessments, including CORE and DIBELS, are conducted to measure students’ reading speed, fluency, and comprehension, with the aim to administer these tests at the start and end of the program.

The program integrates creative writing exercises, encouraging students to express themselves freely without the pressure of grading. This not only engages students but also helps reinforce reading skills through personal creativity.

Local interns act as near-peer role models, inspiring students by highlighting achievable goals. This peer influence fosters a positive learning environment.

The success of this program emphasizes the importance of investing effort into well-organized educational initiatives. As students improve their reading proficiency, they gain broader opportunities for their academic and personal futures. The program has demonstrated that with targeted support, students can overcome challenges and unlock new possibilities, as illustrated by one student’s transition out of remedial English into Junior ROTC, showcasing enhanced educational choices and ambitions.

Source: eSchool News
Read Original:
https://www.eschoolnews.com/innovative-teaching/2026/06/17/6-keys-to-building-a-high-impact-summer-reading-program/

Reading Time: 2 minutesIn 2023, Bob Bolduc, the founder of Hope for Youth and Families, identified a gap in our student’s reading success here in Springfield, Massachusetts.
