An essential element contributing to this crisis is the high pressure from standards-driven public schooling.

This issue traces back to the 1983 report “A Nation at Risk” by the U.S. Department of Education, which criticized the condition of public schools and became the foundation for the standards-based school reform movement. It highlighted decreasing test scores as evidence of educational decline, urging action through reform.

However, a later investigation by the Sandia National Laboratories reported a significant error in the original analysis. They found that, contrary to the initial claims, test scores for various subgroups actually remained stable or improved over time. The overall decline in averages was due to a wider range of students, including those with lower academic skills, taking the tests. This increase in diversity among test-takers skewed the average scores and was misinterpreted as a decline in educational standards.

Despite these findings, the Sandia report was never officially published, and the narrative of educational decline persisted. This led to policy implementations such as the No Child Left Behind Act, the Every Student Succeeds Act, and the Common Core standards, all emphasizing standardized testing.

The focus on test-based standards has influenced the educational landscape significantly, with schools prioritizing test results. Teachers often adapt by narrowing curricula to core tested subjects like literacy and math, sidelining other important areas such as arts and social studies. This test-focused environment can contribute to student stress and detract from a well-rounded education.

Despite the intention to enhance educational outcomes, standardized test scores have not significantly improved, indicating a need to reassess how success is measured in education. Understanding the unintended negative consequences of these standards-driven reforms may encourage educators and parents to advocate for changes to support students’ well-being and broader educational goals.

David Labaree, a sociologist and emeritus professor, along with Deborah Malizia, an attorney and mediator, emphasize the importance of recognizing and addressing these systemic issues for meaningful reform in public education.

Source: The Hechinger Report
Read Original:
<a
